Meals Ready to Eat

By murphydogs

If you’ve read my blog long enough, you will find that I do some of my shopping at the local Army-Navy Surplus store. Our local store is large and stocks just about anything you would need for hunting, fishing or camping. Here, I can purchase either full MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) or just the entrées. There is a wide variety of lunches plus breakfasts such as hash browns and bacon. One package of nut and raisin trail mix contains 400 calories so while it keeps you going during a hunt, you wouldn’t want one for an everyday snack.

To heat my MRE, I take two chemical pocket warmers (I use air-activated ones that average 135 degrees), loosely wrap them in aluminum foil with my MRE packet and vent the aluminum foil so that air can freely get to the pocket warmers. Let it sit for 1 ½ to 2 hours and you have a nice warm lunch. Since the MRE is still sealed in its packet, I don’t have to worry about it spoiling while it heats up.
