The heavy winds that we have had over the past month may be taking a serious toll on the dove population. During this past week we recovered 7 dead dove nestlings from our neighbor’s puppies. One was an obvious road kill, one was a fresh kill so it likely survived being blown out of the nest, and the others had been dead for probably several days.
The Eurasian Collared Doves have left, so I assume that their nest was destroyed by the winds. If this is a widespread situation, it may have a noticeable impact on dove populations come hunting season.
Also:
Various agencies are predicting a bad fire season in Idaho this year, which may lead to restrictions this fall. Due to the good snow pack this past winter and relatively wet spring, there is a good deal of fresh grass and brush. When this matures, it will create a situation ripe for fires.
