A litter of 11 German Shepherd/Great Pyrenees puppies was taken to the animal shelter and for whatever reason, they were not posted online until the day before the entire litter was to be euthanized. That put our local Humane Societies into scramble mode; we were told that they were about 3 months old but our guess is that they’re closer to 2 months. My wife spent yesterday afternoon on the phone and we found a home for one of them. However in the meantime, a volunteer from another Humane Society drove down and picked up the whole litter.
That meant my wife was up early this morning to collect the puppy that we had already committed, freezing fog and roads of black ice aside. The rush was to get Lilly – that’s her new name – before they were transported to the state Humane Society where we understand there is a long waiting list for German Shepherds. We’re going to foster her for a month or two until the new owner is ready to take her.
Lilly and our dogs are doing well together, giving each other the space and respect they need. We do need to keep an eye on Squirt, who’s a little grumpy with the pup; We’ve had to reprimand Squirt a couple of times for being a little over the top on the way she reacts to the pup. Other than that, they’re getting along very well together.

There’s something about puppies, isn’t there? She came down with parvo this afternoon, so we warned the Humane Society and told them to pass the word on to everyone else who’s fostering or adopting her litter mates. She’s spending the night, and maybe the next day or two at the vet’s.
